Locking Bolt for P08 Luger
The locking bolt is located on the left-hand side of the P08 Luger frame and serves as the retaining component for the side plate. Rotated through approximately 90 degrees during disassembly, it allows the side plate to be removed for access to the internal trigger mechanism. Once returned to its locked position, it secures the side plate firmly against the frame and maintains the correct position of the components housed beneath it.
Unlike a conventional screw or cross pin, the locking bolt uses a cammed locking surface to engage the side plate. This design allows rapid field stripping without specialised tools while ensuring that the side plate remains securely retained during firing. The fit between the locking bolt, frame and side plate is therefore important to prevent movement or unnecessary wear.
When replacing the locking bolt, the cam surfaces should be inspected for signs of rounding, peening or excessive wear. It is equally important to examine the locking recess in the side plate, as wear on either component can reduce the effectiveness of the locking system. During assembly, the bolt should rotate smoothly into its locked position without excessive force while holding the side plate firmly against the frame.
As one of the P08 Luger's characteristic design features, the locking bolt reflects the practical engineering behind Georg Luger's pistol. A properly fitted locking bolt helps preserve the original field-stripping system and ensures secure retention of the side plate during normal operation.
