P08 Luger extractor engraved "GELADEN". Functions as both the extractor and the original loaded chamber indicator.
The extractor of the P08 Luger is one of the pistol's most distinctive components. Besides withdrawing the fired cartridge case from the chamber, it also serves as a visual and tactile loaded chamber indicator. When a cartridge is chambered, the extractor pivots outward, exposing the word "GELADEN"—German for "Loaded"—on the left side of the receiver. This ingenious feature allowed the shooter to confirm the condition of the pistol without retracting the toggle assembly.
The extractor is fitted into the breechblock and operates under spring tension, engaging the cartridge rim as the action closes. During extraction, it maintains control of the cartridge case until it contacts the fixed ejector, allowing the empty case to be expelled from the pistol. Correct geometry of the extractor claw is essential for dependable extraction, while the external profile ensures the loaded chamber indicator functions as originally intended.
When fitting a new extractor, the extractor spring and extractor plunger should also be inspected to ensure smooth operation. The extractor must pivot freely within the breechblock without excessive resistance, while still maintaining positive engagement with the cartridge rim. Any fouling or burrs in the extractor recess should be removed before reassembly.
This extractor follows the original P08 pattern and features the "GELADEN" marking, making it suitable for the maintenance and historically correct restoration of WWI and WWII Luger pistols.
