MP40 Firing Pin

Inside the bolt assembly of every MP38 and MP40 is the firing pin, the component responsible for transferring the energy of the bolt to the primer of the cartridge. During the final stage of the bolt's forward movement, the firing pin strikes the primer, initiating the firing sequence before the bolt begins its rearward travel.

Because the firing pin is subjected to repeated impact forces, it is one of the internal components most susceptible to wear after prolonged use. A worn tip, cracks, or deformation can result in inconsistent primer strikes or ignition problems. Careful inspection during maintenance is therefore recommended, particularly on firearms that have seen extensive service.
